Malcolm Le Grice
Born May 1940, Malcolm Le Grice studied painting at Plymouth College of Art and the Slade. In 1965 he started making film video and computer art which he exhibited in Europe, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and, Japan.
He is widely recognised as a pioneer of 'Expanded Cinema' and has been featured in many international festivals and exhibitions including; Paris Biennale No.8; Arte Inglese Oggi Milan; Une Histoire du Cinema Paris; Documenta 6 Kassel; and Behind the Facts at the Fondacion Joan Miro, Barcelona.
His work has been screened at the MOMA, New York, the Louvre in Paris. and in November 2008 he showed a series of installation and performance works marking the opening of the Tanks Gallery at Tate Modern. His works are in collections including: the Centre Georges Pompidou; the Royal Belgian Film Archive; the National Film Library of Australia; the German Cinamatheque Archive; and Canadian Distribution Centre. Three longer films: 'Finnegans Chin', 'Sketches for a Sensual Philosophy' and 'Chronos Fragmented'. have been transmitted on British TV.
He founded the production workshop at the London Film Makers Cooperative and established a Film Department at St Martins School of Art. He became Dean of Media Art at University of Westminster then, promoting Doctorates in Art Practice, was appointed Research Professor at the University of The Arts, London. He served on Committees for the British Film Institute and the Arts Council and on Academic committees including, the CNAA, the Higher Education Funding Council and the Arts and Humanities Research Board.
He has published numerous journal articles on film, video and digital media and in the 1970's wrote monthly for Studio International. Then in 1977 publishing 'Abstract Film and Beyond' Studio Vista and MIT, and in 2001'Experimental Cinema in the Digital Age', British Film Institute.
