Maggie Evans (1932 – 2015) came from Wigan art school to the Slade School of Art in 1954.  There she was championed by William Coldstream who greatly valued her unique talent.  Her work was highly original, she won many prizes including the Prix de Rome and the John Moores Junior Prize and she was considered to be one of the leading painters among her contemporaries who included Paula Rego, MichaelAndrews, and Lucien Freud.

In 1964 'Portrait of an Artist Maggie Evans' was made by David Storey for the BBC Monitor series.

After leaving the Slade, like many women of her generation Maggie got involved in a bohemian milieu of art, domesticity and the bringing up of her 5 children.  She continued to paint and make superb chalk and oil pastel drawings expressing her unique vision with a fluency and ease of gesture, working everyday amongst the colourful chaos of family life until she died at the age of 82.

The Maggie Evans Estate were participants in the first round of the Art360 Programme, which offered 33 artists and estates tailored archival and legacy support, supported by Arts Council England.
