Born in Hertfordshire in 1943, Edward Woodman began taking photographs when he was given his first camera, a Brownie. The turning point for Woodman was in 1981 when he was invited by Sandy Nairne to photograph sculptures for the ICA / Arnolfini ‘Objects and Sculpture’ catalogue. This group exhibition included works by Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, and Bill Woodrow among others.

Woodman’s photographs range from artists at work in their studios, to portraits of artists, and works installed in galleries, museums and exhibition spaces.

During his career Woodman has worked with a range of artists and art venues, and also directly with many artists including Edward Allington, Helen Chadwick, Anya Gallaccio, Damien Hirst, Michael Landy, Cornelia Parker, Rachel Whiteread and Richard Wilson.

In 2000, Woodman had a cycling accident that brought his commercial career to a halt though he continues to take his own photographs.
